A living legacy is believed to be crafted using techniques during the Yan Mongol advance in the 13th century. Popular among the upper class during the Koryo period, it later gained fame for its high quality drink. The manufacturing process of Andong Soju has been passed down through generations among local Andong gentry families.

Bit of soju history: The soju was found its way to Korea through the Mongolian influence during the Yan Dynasty. This journey continued as Kublai, grandson of Genghis Khan, advanced into the Korean peninsula. Known by various names such as noju for its distillation process and hwaju for the fire used in its making, soju was initially considered a medicinal drink, even earning King Danjong’s mentionin the Danjoongshilok.
